Active Air Terminal Ground Mounted Project - IEC 62305
The active air terminal for ground mounted projects is an Early Streamer Emission (ESE) lightning protection system designed to safeguard large solar PV fields and infrastructure from direct lightning strikes. Mounted on tall masts (typically 5-10 meters or higher), the active terminal uses an ionizing device to generate an upward leader streamer ahead of conventional rods, intercepting strikes over a wide protection radius.
ESE systems are particularly suited for ground mounted solar because a single air terminal can cover 10,000-20,000 m² or more, depending on height and level of protection (e.g., 100m+ radius at 5m height). This minimizes the number of strike points needed, avoiding shadow effects on panels and simplifying down-conductor routing to the earth grid. The system includes the active head, insulated mast, grounding cable and integration with the site's equipotential bonding and surge protection.
By deploying active air terminals strategically around the array perimeter and high-risk zones, ground mounted solar projects achieve comprehensive lightning protection that reduces downtime, equipment damage and insurance premiums. Standards like NFC 17-102 guide placement and performance verification through lab testing of streamer advance time. Sugatu.in offers complete active air terminal solutions for ground mounted solar, ensuring reliable integration with civil foundations, earthing systems and O&M requirements.
How it works
- Define the protection level: Solar Ground mounted project with robotic cleaning wet or dry cleaning is determined. (R) radius of the rolling sphere and class indicated level of protection and a smaller sphere radius
- Roll the spheres: Technical team imagine a sphere of Radus ROLLING over the entire structure including the edges and corners
- Identify unprotected area : Anywhere the sphere encounters the structure surface is deemed an unprotected area
- Place air terminal: Aluminium air termination rod are places at contact points to intercept the lightning strike. The sphere rolling path helps designers ensure that side strikes are also protected especially of uneven surfaces or taller structures.
- Consider side strikes: the method is effective for structure up to a certain height or large solar parks around 40 m as it addresses the possibility of lighting striking the sides of the building rather than just the top or any areas left by the range of the sphere in solar ground mounted project
